This sparrow occupies alpine and subalpine levels and is noted preference for areas that have little vegetation nearby glaciers. Prefer wild environments, with scree and rocky cliffs interspersed among alpine pastures. Generally, do not drop below 1,800 meters to 2,200 meters in winter and in summer.

The few breeding pairs that are found in the most inaccessible northern side of the Pyrenees. The rest of the year they move in groups where concentrates are able to feed themselves, sometimes very close to residential areas. At the moment they can be seen mixing with white birds with wing from the Alps.
